Turkey unrequited

For those who gain their insights into the natural world from seasonal decorations, Christmas trees are uniformly conical, snow crystals are always stellar, and turkeys display in the fall just in time to be decapitated for the Thanksgiving table. The other nonsense aside, spring is when Wild Turkeys display and strut.

This is the first time I have witnessed this ostentation.

The display was from a lone tom wandering amongst a couple of dozen hens. He would trot over to one group and they would turn away and carry on snacking. He would then try another group with the same depressing result.

Somehow the whole scene was mildly reminiscent of the awkwardness of a junior-high dance. I sympathized.

    Alistair,

Your connection to turkeys makes total sense to me but it is time to let go what happened in middle school. These days we are all encouraged to stay in the moment. Good luck.

    With warmest regards,

    Kevin

Wow, such a stunning display. I’m sure the girls were just being coy encouraging to him to strut his stuff.

A woman’s appetite can be a ferocious thing, but, yes, I think Grace has it right. I’ve never seen anything turkeyish as stunning as this last. Verily, I’d think the hens would be jealous; way more flounces, trims, lace, crinolines, puckers than the most dolled-up dance-hall girl. In case Kevin doesn’t answer, Alistair, never abandon childlike curiosity. It contributes at least 90% of what makes adultness endurable.

Wow! I love the colours in the final photo, how could any girl resist? If only we were so adorned… Childlike curiosity? I hope to never lose it.
