Circumhorizontal arc

It’s that time of year: mid-day in June is the time to watch for the circumhorizontal arc. The arc forms low in the sky when the Sun is high.

I watched for it yesterday, but did not have a good view to the south. Fortunately, at about the same time Nicole Tremblay spotted it from the highway north of Schroeder Creek. I will watch for it again midday today.

One Response to Circumhorizontal arc

  1. Alistair says:

After posting Nicole’s (correctly identified) picture of the circumhorizontal arc as seen from Kootenay Lake yesterday, there was a story on the CBC program Daybreak South about some other pictures that were posted to the CBC Facebook page. I note that the two phenomena illustrated there (a 22° halo and the circumhorizontal arc) are neither rainbows (as claimed), nor iridescence (as their link to a supposed explanation claims). Further, they are not strange, but perfectly normal. Sigh…. However, the photographer is to be complimented for spotting and recording these nice phenomena.
