Heron leapfrog

It looked rather as if it were an avian version of leapfrog.

Two juvenile herons repeatedly shifted their foraging location along the shore. Yet, as they moved one at a time, and the second always flew past the first, in my imagination, theirs was a game of heron leapfrog.

Two pictures show different leaps.

    Stunning! These look like paintings.

Here in Edinburgh a lily pond around a large building is the home of many large goldfish. As we passed there was an adult Heron enjoying a splendid breakfast…. the fish didn’t stand a chance.

thanks again for a splendid picture. Irene

Alistair you seem to really like Herons; so do I. This evening I received an email with a link to an amazing Heron video. You need to watch it to believe what happens and see what the Heron is capable of. No spoilers here…

Leon, I am indeed partial to herons, and I fortunately see them with some regularity. The video showed a heron catching and eating a vole. I have watched this and have posted a picture. See my vole begone.

Once again Alistair you captured a moment in an amazing shot. Some of what I found very interesting about watching the video is the stealth shown, the patience exhibited before the quick drop and reposition of the prey, and then the time it took for the lump to move down the long neck, much like how sometimes a snake’s large meal can be seen as a bulge.
