According to the BC Wildfire Service website posted at 17:51 today, a “Controlled fire is being used to strengthen control lines and contain the fire to the areas between Duhamel Creek and Sitkum Creek.” . . . a beautiful photo though!
Indeed. Within an hour or so after this shot the scene looked quite different. The Duhamel creek east slope was burning slowly and inexorably down the steep hillside as burning debris rolled down into fresh fuel. I was on the west slope today and there are a few smoking spots but mostly further up the valley.
Saturday evening a group of three specialty helicopters were doing circuits; sucking water into a belly tank through a snorkel, then climbing to drop the water on the hot spots that remained.
I’m sure you must be feeling, “Will this never end?!” I know I am. Woke up to morning news that the Martin Mars water bomber was attacking the fire; they showed footage of a drop it made at the crest of the mountain. (27,000 litres of life saving water on each pass – still the largest fixed wing water bomber in the world) Sincere hopes that this will finally bring an end to Kootenay Lake’s prolonged nightmare.
Wow that is really scary!

Thanks Ron for the latest, appreciate knowing that.

What a beautiful picture with the fire and the lake, the colors are amazing.
