The kingfisher is restless when fishing and skittish when approached. So on the rare occasion when one is close, a picture is in order.
The kingfisher has been described as cute, probably because its oversized head and disheveled hair remind us of children.
My dad was fond of remarking upon sighting a kingfisher that “a little dab’ll do ya” after the commercial catch phrase for Brylcream.
Doug, ah yes, Brylcream has almost died at the hands of fickle fashion, just as macassar oil had before that. But, the kingfisher lives on.
As I recall, the indigenous peoples of the west coast view the Kingfisher as a sign of good things to come. Must admit the ‘frazzled’ mop suits a skittish nature!
The Kingfisher is a so sweety guy
He always reminds me of Jerzy Kosinski, the Polish writer. I became enamoured of them this past season through a number of sightings, one by Fort Steele during the kokanee spawning in creekish, estuary-like water flowing out of Kootenay River where a kingfisher was hunting the piscine redbodies – to avoid re using the syllable fish. (And, what’s become of all the unemployed antimacassars, Alistair?)
Pamella, attrition has dealt with most antimacassars, some survive on EI, and a few have found work adorning flower arrangements.
Ha! Thanks, Alistair.
