Ah — your black and white friend.
I have two residents here in Riondel. They come to my pond to drink, they collect berries and bugs under my Mulberry tree, and they live under my wooden path. We respect each other, and so far it is an amicable relationship. I laugh every time I watch them coming under my front gate and down the path to flow, accordion pattern, down three steps and off to their back yard home.
If, however, I approach from the back lane, and they are sitting on what they consider to be their back steps, I must chat with them and tell them I’m coming up the steps. This interchange proceeds for several minutes until eventually they decide to dive into their home and I can continue to mine.

Wendy, that is a lovely description. It matches others I have heard from folks who have skunks in residence: Skunks are chary but amiable.
