{"id":10173,"date":"2014-04-07T08:09:20","date_gmt":"2014-04-07T15:09:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=10173"},"modified":"2014-04-07T08:56:02","modified_gmt":"2014-04-07T15:56:02","slug":"tree-swallow-wooing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=10173","title":{"rendered":"Tree Swallow wooing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tree Swallows are back and competing for both mates and nesting sites.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tree Swallows don&#8217;t build their own nests but make use of cavities previously carved by other birds, often woodpeckers. The cavity in the piling, below, was made by a flicker a decade ago and has been taken over by swallows in the last few years. Males find and defend a potential cavity and then offer it to a female. A male without a cavity nest can father chicks, but a female without one cannot reproduce.<\/p>\n<p>Owing to the competition among Tree Swallows, they are combative. Males attack other males; Females attack other females. Further, some apparent attacks may be acrobatic displays of fitness between potential partners. Only the birds know what they are doing.<\/p>\n<p>It is probably a male that is looking out of this cavity in an attempt to attract a female to his find. But, is that a competitive male or an interested female on top of the piling?<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-10174\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/treeswallows140401cs.jpg\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The two birds then set about doing some acrobatic flying.
