{"id":10777,"date":"2014-06-04T06:24:54","date_gmt":"2014-06-04T13:24:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=10777"},"modified":"2014-06-04T06:26:10","modified_gmt":"2014-06-04T13:26:10","slug":"ladys-slipper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=10777","title":{"rendered":"Lady&#8217;s Slipper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I confess\u00a0to taking a particular delight in observing\u00a0local wild orchids.<\/p>\n<p>Spring started well with\u00a0<a title=\"Fairy slippers\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=10525\">fairy slippers<\/a> in Kokanee Creek Park. While it didn&#8217;t diminish the pleasure, I had seen them other years and so knew where to look. Today&#8217;s observations of mountain lady&#8217;s slippers were unexpected.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Previously, the only mountain lady&#8217;s slippers I had seen around the Lake were\u00a0on the East Shore, and these ones obligingly hung out with other wild orchids: yellow lady&#8217;s slippers, striped coralroots, and giant helleborines. Those gems appear on my <a href=\"http:\/\/kootenay-lake.ca\/wildflowers\/orchids\/index.html\">orchid page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But, mountain lady&#8217;s slippers on the West Arm and in Kokanee Creek Park? Apparently even\u00a0seasoned local naturalists have\u00a0not spotted them here\u00a0before. I did not see\u00a0any other orchids in the immediate vicinity.<\/p>\n<p>Towering over the surrounding wildflowers, mountain lady&#8217;s slippers often have\u00a0more than one flower on a stem.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10778\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/ladysslipper140603cs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The name, lady&#8217;s slipper, seems\u00a0appropriate when\u00a0this delicate orchid is viewed\u00a0in profile.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10779\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/ladysslipper140603bs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lovely<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10780\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/ladysslipper140603as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; I confess\u00a0to taking a particular delight in observing\u00a0local wild orchids.
