Yet, they do nest nearby on small lakes higher in the mountains, which\u00a0is where I saw\u00a0<a title=\"Loon\u2019s nest\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=8065\">one<\/a> last year. This year, the nest on that lake was much more distant across the water. I still managed some views, first of loons in waters near me, and then of eggs in\u00a0the nest. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0While the loons usually stay far from humans, on this occasion they were\u00a0close.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-10990\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/loon140630s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This allowed some detailed\u00a0views.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-10989\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/loon140630as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The nest was not always\u00a0occupied but, on this occasion, it was.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-10986\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/loon140701as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When the loon was not incubating, two eggs were evident.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-10987\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/loon140701bs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This backside view of a loon adjusting the position of its eggs with its bill is the oddest bird\u00a0picture I have taken.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-10988\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/loon140701cs2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Loons do not nest on Kootenay Lake because\u00a0the springtime changes in water level are so large that a shoreline nest would be flooded.
