Yet, they are remarkably secretive about doing so. Frequently\u00a0seen are the chicks of\u00a0Mallards, Common Mergansers and Canada Geese, but not Wood Ducks.<\/p>\n<p>At least,\u00a0this is the first time I chanced on Wood Duck chicks. Curiously, despite the large number of campers at Kokanee Creek Park, this skittish species was secreted not far from a busy campground.<\/p>\n<p>There were at least\u00a0four chicks, but only the mother and two of them\u00a0appear\u00a0in this grab shot taken though foliage just before they all vanished, presumably as a rebuff to my presence&#8212;although, I really wasn&#8217;t all that close.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11134\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/woodduck140715s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; I don&#8217;t suppose that any local birder would doubt that Wood Ducks breed around the Lake.
