Now, for about a week, a Harlequin\u00a0has been seen on the creek again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The breeding season is over so, while distinguishable, each sex is similarly drab. This is a female, or a juvenile.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11658\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/harlequin140919es.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Harlequin Ducks hunt while swimming under water. Here the stream is sufficiently shallow that the duck has rolled over on its right side. It is heading to the left of the picture; its left\u00a0wing is seen in\u00a0the middle of the picture\u00a0and its left\u00a0foot is pushing against the water at the bottom. The duck seems to be chasing something.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11660\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/harlequin140919hs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">After one such underwater scurry, the Harlequin surfaced with a fry which was promptly swallowed.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11659\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/harlequin140919as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">On another occasion it was hunting under some of the rocks on the floor of the creek when\u00a0it found\u00a0and then ate what appears to be a (caddisfly?) larva.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11657\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/harlequin140919fs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; The first observations of Harlequin Ducks on Kokanee Creek this century were made this May\u00a0at which time\u00a0the males appeared in their breeding finery.
