{"id":11678,"date":"2014-09-29T10:59:20","date_gmt":"2014-09-29T17:59:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=11678"},"modified":"2014-09-29T10:59:20","modified_gmt":"2014-09-29T17:59:20","slug":"harlequin-finale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=11678","title":{"rendered":"Harlequin finale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The recently arrived <a title=\"Harlequin hunting\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=11655\">Harlequin Duck<\/a> seems to have now left Kokanee Creek. She will be heading to the Coast. Such a migration\u00a0is a little\u00a0odd: Other migrating ducks travel north and south; Harlequins travel east and west.<\/p>\n<p>Why did this harlequin female deserve one more posting before she left? Because I got shots of her hunting underwater. I have only managed to do this with one other bird: a dipper. As that <a title=\"Flying under water\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=9342\">dipper posting<\/a> showed, the dipper flies underwater using its wings, for unlike a duck, it doesn&#8217;t have\u00a0webbed feet to propel it. As the second picture below shows, the harlequin holds its wings against\u00a0its body and propels itself with its webbed feet.<\/p>\n<p>The harlequin is seen searching the rocky bottom of the stream immediately after diving.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11681\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/harlequin140925bs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The harlequin then turns sideways and reveals that it is propelling itself with its feet, not its wings.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11679\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/harlequin140925cs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>She surfaces and is soon off to the Coast.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11680\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/harlequin140925ds.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; The recently arrived Harlequin Duck seems to have now left Kokanee Creek.
