Yes. They aren&#8217;t as good at it as are Black Bears, but as long as there are plenty of branches to grasp, they will happily climb. This is the story of grizzlies in a black-hawthorn tree.<\/p>\n<p>It is October and steam fog rises from\u00a0the fish-filled streams that flow into Kootenay Lake.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11776\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/steamfog141002s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A family of Grizzly Bears patrols the shoreline.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11778\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/grizzly141001gs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, these grizzlies seek\u00a0berries from trees rather than fish from the stream.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11778\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/grizzly141001hs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Alas, the Kokanee salmon are in the deeper water out of easy reach of bears. This will change after the fish spawn, die, and float towards the shore.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11777\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/kokanee141001s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The sow (centre top) and her male cub (right top) climbed high in a  black-hawthorn tree. The female cub (centre bottom) tried to climb, but was too small to manage it.\u00a0<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11778\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/grizzly141001cs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The sow fed on black-hawthorn berries,<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11778\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/grizzly141001ds.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>as did her son.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11778\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/grizzly141001es.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Because her hungary daughter could not climb the tree, the sow tried to break off a branch to drop it to her. She failed\u00a0and so climbed down, found a smaller tree and knocked it over so her daughter could feed.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11778\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/grizzly141001is.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The family then wandered off in search of more berries.
