So, if one searches for <i>Vancouver Canada<\/i>, out of the many million listings bing produces, it labels the one from the city, itself, as being the official one:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b><a href=\"http:\/\/vancouver.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Vancouver<\/a> \u2014 Official Site<br \/>vancouver.ca<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Similarly, among the many results from a search for <i>Selkirk College<\/i>, bing obligingly says the same about this institution&#8217;s site:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b><a href=\"http:\/\/selkirk.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Selkirk College<\/a> \u2014 Official Site <br \/>selkirk.ca<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Fair enough, that sounds as if it is a useful distinction for a listing.<\/p>\n<p>If you now use bing to search for <i>Kootenay Lake<\/i>, you discover over a million results, but topping them all is the regions&#8217;s official site of (ta-dah):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kootenay-lake.ca\/\">Kootenay Lake<\/a> \u2014 Official Site<br \/>www.kootenay-lake.ca<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Yikes, how did they come to that conclusion? What bizarre bit of algorithmic processing has prompted Microsoft to decide that a retiree&#8217;s\u00a0hobby site can possibly be\u00a0the <b>official<\/b> spokesman for the\u00a0region?<\/p>\n<p>Now, I suspect that various provincial ministries would justifiably\u00a0protest my authority\u00a0to speak officially on behalf of, say,\u00a0trees, bears, bumble bees, lake levels,\u00a0soils, or water purity. Yet, I have a face-saving solution for Microsoft: in the absence of staunch opposition, I will allow my site to speak officially on behalf of\u00a0local\u00a0rainbows&mdash;and just maybe steam devils (below).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">Alistair<br \/>Microsoft-certified official local spokesman<\/p>\n<p>With all of this in mind, I proclaim my favourite rainbow from this summer to be an officially approved bow.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2171\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/rainbowpano140620bs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And I might just push my luck and speak officially on behalf of steam devils also.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2171\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/steamdevil131207bs2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"360\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; bing.com (the Microsoft and Yahoo search engine) tries to add helpful information alongside its listings.
