It used the ice as a platform to dive for eggs of a Kokanee salmon.\u00a0<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12112\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/dipper141204as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The dipper&#8217;s forays were\u00a0surprisingly successful. The dipper acquired a Kokanee egg on perhaps a third to a half of its dives. It brought the egg back to the ice shelf and devoured it there. The golden colour of the egg indicates that it has been fertilized; this is a Kokanee that will not swim in the Lake.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12111\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/dipper141204bs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What was particularly interesting was that the dipper would often retrieve a string of eggs from the base of the creek, but would then seem to initially deposit them on the ice.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12109\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/dipper141204de.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It would then retrieve them individually and eat them one by one.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12110\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/dipper141204cs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My favourite shot was of an apparently botched retrieval where the egg went flying though the air.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12108\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/dipper141204es.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; A dipper sat on the border ice of a creek.
