I have watched gulls and geese (the latter only during the mating season) play a game which involves approaching a perched advisory from behind to displace it. (There are other species that seem happy to share a perch.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A few days ago, I noticed an interspecies version of the game.<\/p>\n<p>A Belted Kingfisher was watching for fish from atop a piling.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13276\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/kingfisher150401as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Abruptly, it dived over the side.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13277\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/kingfisher150401bs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It was quickly evident that the kingfisher&#8217;s departure was a result of a Northern Flicker approaching from behind. Here the ascending flicker is seen on the left while the displaced kingfisher is partly hidden by the piling.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13275\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/kingfisher_flicker150401cs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Some birds seem to have their own version of a child&#8217;s game, king of the castle.
