When seen from afar, they could have been beetles. A tiny patch of lakeshore was crawling with them, for having grown legs, they were no longer tadpoles, albeit still sporting tails.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-14231\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/westerntoads150713bs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I was not alone in enjoying the sight. A snake slithered away, presumably having been sated. A couple of Song Sparrows wandered through the crowd. Most interesting were a half-dozen juvenile robins.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-14230\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/robin150713as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The robins would pluck toadlets off the surface and swallow them one after another.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-14229\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/robin150713bs2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, fans of the Western Toad will be happy to know that many toadlets remained after the robins flew off.<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-14232\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/westerntoads150713as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; The froggy wooing,\u00a0reported in early May, seems to have had consequences.
