These dragonflies are both stunning and new to me. Peter McIver had led the West Kootenay Naturalists to this area around Leach Lake following the visit to the <a title=\"Harlequin ducks\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=1671\">Harlequin Ducks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 2px 6px 4px 6px; margin-top: 4px; margin-left: 8px; width: 240px; float: right; clear: left; color: #555555; background-color: #eeeeee; border: #dddddd 2px solid;\">The Kootenay Lake website offers other pictures of local <a href=\"http:\/\/kootenay-lake.ca\/bugs\/dragonflies\/index.html\">dragonflies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The dragonflies I am used to seeing are darners (<em>Aeshna<\/em>) and snaketails (<em>Ophiogomphus<\/em>), but only rarely have I seen a skimmer (<em>Libellula<\/em>), and it has always had been a Common whitetail.<\/p>\n<p>The Four-spotted Skimmer (<em>Libellula quadrimaculata<\/em>) is named for the black spots on the front middle of each of its four wings.
