So it was, that during last Saturday\u2019s field trip of the West Kootenay Naturalists\u00a0to the fresh\u2013water marshes south of Kootenay Lake, I managed to get close enough to take pictures of both a Red\u2013winged Blackbird and some Yellow\u2013headed Blackbirds. Both birds favour marshes where they are often seen perched on cattails.<\/p>\n<p>The red shoulder markings on the wing of the male are usually hidden but may be displayed when the bird is perched and singing.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1702\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/redwingedblackbird110514s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This Yellow\u2013headed Blackbird is probably watching for insects to eat.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1703\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/yellowheadedblackbird110514cs.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The dominant foraging technique is to look for bugs while walking.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1705\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/yellowheadedblackbird110514as.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This Yellow\u2013headed Blackbird has deployed alulae\u00a0to maintain lift during a bank.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1706\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/yellowheadedblackbird110514bs.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A visit to a marsh reveals birds that don\u2019t frequent the well\u2013drained portions of the region.
