It hovers over flowers\u00a0sipping nectar like\u00a0a hummingbird, but\u00a0it looks like a giant bumble bee. It is neither bird, bee, nor fly. Rather, this oddity is a daytime-flying moth with clear wings. Sometimes called\u00a0a hummingbird moth,\u00a0sometimes\u00a0a clearwing moth, the species occasionally seen locally has the name of a Rocky Mountain Clearwing (<i>Hemaris thetis).<\/i><\/p>\n<p>I saw this moth on lilacs\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=8002\">three years ago<\/a> and on dandelions <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=5210\">four years ago<\/a>,\u00a0but I had not found it since then until a few days ago. Curiously when seen, it was foraging on exactly the same few square metres of dandelions where one was seen\u00a0four years ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Offered without further comment\u00a0are four views of\u00a0a Rocky Mountain Clearwing.
