Some remain\u00a0in nests, but many waterfowl are already swimming.<\/p>\n<p>Often the first chicks to be seen on the Lake are those of our local\u00a0<i>avis non grata<\/i>, the Canada Goose. It gains this epithet by its proclivity to defecate\u00a0on our lawns and fields. Balanced against this is the fact that these are the only chicks in this posting where both the male and female attend to them. This is a family bird, despite its other undesirable behaviour.\u00a0<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-17228\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/geese160507s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the most common birds on the Lake is the Mallard. I wish her luck with her new family.<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-17229\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/mallard160512as.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This Common Merganser female is certainly the epitome of fecundity.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-17231\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/merganser160521s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is a Hooded Merganser female. She has her own small brood.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/hoodedmerganser160521s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-17234\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Finally, a (Common?)
