We are\u00a0all\u00a0depressingly aware of recent vicious attacks made by individuals\u00a0who believe they know the ultimate truth and\u00a0that anyone who might think differently should be either\u00a0cloistered\u00a0or killed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
My recent experiences fall well short of this level of\u00a0megalomania. Yet, they are a symptom of the same mindset: destroy rather than\u00a0build.<\/p>\n
In the last two days, my blog has been under continual\u00a0attack by those who would subvert it to their own sleazy purposes. Not content to promote their ideas or products on their own merits, they prefer\u00a0to co-opt the work of others.\u00a0<\/p>\n
I note that my\u00a0blog is at most only of minor local interest. It discusses the wildlife, natural phenomena, and scenes around Kootenay Lake, Canada. Yet, in the last few years, it has been hacked twice and forced\u00a0to (temporarily) promote irrelevant pharmaceuticals. At present,\u00a0it is experiencing\u00a0a third, ongoing, widespread, and coordinated attack, presumably with the objective of similarly turning\u00a0it to the dark side.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The attack on blog.kootenay-lake.ca is impressive in its scope. In two days, there\u00a0have been over three hundred attacks and that number is still climbing. Here is a list of the countries (internet jurisdictions) from which attacks\u00a0have so far arisen:<\/p>\n

Three\u00a0things are worth recognizing:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Computers in many\u00a0of these countries are responsible for not one, but multiple attacks
\n\u2022 It is likely that the attacks are coordinated from one location\u00a0and that the owners of the compromised machines\u00a0have no knowledge of\u00a0what is going on
\n\u2022 The\u00a0attacks are\u00a0undoubtedly incidental to my\u00a0blog’s\u00a0specific content, arising only because the work\u00a0of others is deemed exploitable.\u00a0<\/p>\n
