{"id":17845,"date":"2016-07-04T11:59:47","date_gmt":"2016-07-04T18:59:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=17845"},"modified":"2016-07-04T11:59:47","modified_gmt":"2016-07-04T18:59:47","slug":"protect-and-serve","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=17845","title":{"rendered":"Protect and serve"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Protect\u00a0and serve\u00a0&#8212; not\u00a0the police, parents &#8212; and not people, birds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While\u00a0chicks are in the nest, bird parents have a seemingly endless task of ferrying food in and waste out. And then there is the job of keeping predators at bay.<\/p>\n<p>A dipper parent brings an aquatic insect to its four demanding chicks.<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-17847\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/dipper160702as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These dipper parents have already done much to protect their chicks from land predators. The nest\u00a0is under a bridge high over a raging stream. Further, the\u00a0bridge deck\u00a0prevents a\u00a0raptor&#8217;s attack\u00a0from above. Nevertheless, the\u00a0nest must be kept clean. Chicks expel faeces\u00a0in a white sac which parents then remove and discard.\u00a0<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-17846\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/dipper160702bs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As with dippers, both Tree Swallow parents deliver insects to the nest. This is a male. The chicks are not yet big enough to be peeking out.<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-17851\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/treeswallow160701cs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Having delivered food to the nest, the female swallow heads off on the endless round.<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-17853\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/treeswallow1600702bs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And both remove faecal sacs from the nest and drop them far away.<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-17848\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/treeswallow160702as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With all the coming and going, sometimes parents collide.<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-17852\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/treeswallow160701bs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Tree Swallows must protect their nest. In this case, a female Common Goldeneye landed and twice peered\u00a0into the cavity. It isn&#8217;t\u00a0trying to eat the chicks, and it is late in the season for a\u00a0goldeneye to start nesting. However, inexperienced female goldeneyes will begin looking for potential cavities the summer before breeding. Even though it is not an immediate threat, from\u00a0the swallow&#8217;s point of view, the goldeneye had to be driven off.<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-17849\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/treeswallowgoldeneye160701s2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Midst the activity, I managed perhaps\u00a0my best shot of a swallow in flight.<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-17850\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/treeswallow1600702cs2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Protect\u00a0and serve\u00a0&#8212; not\u00a0the police, parents &#8212; and not people, birds.\u00a0 While\u00a0chicks are in the nest, bird parents have a seemingly endless task of ferrying food in and waste out.
