This combination increases the chances of capturing interesting scenes. Yesterday&#8217;s walk recorded\u00a0winners and losers among the predators\u00a0and\u00a0some rather\u00a0satisfying images.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0Common Merganser chasing a fish produces\u00a0an impressive burst of speed &#8212; and\u00a0a striking image.<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18523\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/merganser160830as2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Speed pays. Six seconds after being caught, the fish had vanished down the merganser&#8217;s gullet.\u00a0<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18522\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/merganser160830bs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While the merganser was a winner, this osprey lost. It did catch a kokanee now clasped in the bird&#8217;s left claws. Alas, catching a fish is only part of the exercise for it has to be lifted from the water and flown to a place where it can be eaten. This kokanee proved too heavy to lift.
