{"id":19502,"date":"2017-01-31T11:11:02","date_gmt":"2017-01-31T19:11:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=19502"},"modified":"2017-02-02T16:58:04","modified_gmt":"2017-02-03T00:58:04","slug":"january-goulash-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=19502","title":{"rendered":"January goulash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is an end-of-the-month collection of images, none of which has had a posting of its own.<\/p>\n<p>Each winter, we hope\u00a0to see irruptive species, birds whose southward migration is sufficiently erratic that on any given year they may or may not appear. There are perhaps a dozen-and-a-half such species that one sees only every so often. This has not been a good year to see\u00a0irruptive species. I saw a\u00a0flock of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=19078\">Pine Siskins<\/a>\u00a0last November, a half-dozen\u00a0Bohemian Waxwings this month, and this lone Pine Grosbeak. Slim pickings, indeed, for this winter.<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-19509\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/pinegrosbeak170125s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Belted Kingfisher is a permanent resident and a frequent visitor along the lakeshore.<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-19507\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/kingfisher170130s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I see a Pileated Woodpecker maybe once a month, but I cannot recall seeing two together before. The one on the left is an adult, but the dark eye of the one on the right indicates that it is a juvenile.\u00a0<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-19505\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/pileatedwoodpecker170129s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At only a tenth the weight of the Pileated is the Downy Woodpecker. It is not seen as often.<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-19504\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/downywoodpecker170125s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Throughout a year, I see many birds and mammals and many of\u00a0their young. Yet, I rarely have seen a dead animal. I guess that nature normally cleans them up quickly. This dead Long-tailed Weasel could not have been cleaned up by nature until it was first fished out a\u00a0toilet where it had drowned.<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-19506\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/weasel170129s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"360\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Distinctly more alive is this female Bighorn Sheep.<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-19503\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/bighornsheep170125s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In late January a year ago, I managed to get a picture of Double-crested Cormorant expressing itself (<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=16181\">Now hear this<\/a>). It has happened again.<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-19508\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/cormorant170128as2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; This is an end-of-the-month collection of images, none of which has had a posting of its own.
