This year, a few turned up on schedule, but the insects they feast upon\u00a0were tardy. Jaunts to see bluebirds found numbers to be sparse &#8212; until this last weekend.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>How could this creature be named\u00a0anything other than <i>bluebird<\/i>? <br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-19994\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/mountainbluebird170408as2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The muted colour of the female gives better camouflage from predators. <br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-19992\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/mountainbluebird1704084s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A male had\u00a0flown down to the dried grass in an unsuccessful raid on\u00a0an insect. <br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-19991\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/mountainbluebird170408cs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You needn&#8217;t even try to photograph me in flight; I am way too fast for you.&#8221; <br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-19993\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/mountainbluebird170408bs2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Why watch for Mountain Bluebirds each spring?
