I was crouched low (and I thought, inconspicuously)\u00a0on a forest hillside taking pictures of wildflowers\u00a0when a\u00a0family hiked by, paused, saw what I was doing, and\u00a0asked, &#8220;Are you Alistair?&#8221; So it was that among my blog&#8217;s largely unknown subscribers, I had a rare accidental meeting with one of them.<\/p>\n<p>It was also an uncommon meeting with the orchids I was photographing. The fairy slipper (<em>Calypso bulbosa<\/em>) is the first orchid to emerge in the spring and, of the eight local wild orchids I have photographed, it is loveliest.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I am used to seeing the fairy slipper in groups of two or three, so this crowd was special.<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-20561\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/fairyslippers170519as2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, the grandest view is that of a single profile.<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-20562\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/fairyslipper170519bs2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; It was an unexpected experience.
