It is named for the colour, grey, not a person named Gray.<\/p>\n<p>This was an unusual observation: A flock of about six dozen Gray-crowned Rosy Finches flew around Kokanee Creek Provincial Park. <a href=\"http:\/\/ebird.org\/ebird\/map\/gcrfin?neg=true&#038;env.minX=&#038;env.minY=&#038;env.maxX=&#038;env.maxY=&#038;zh=false&#038;gp=false&#038;ev=Z&#038;mr=1-12&#038;bmo=1&#038;emo=12&#038;yr=all&#038;byr=1900&#038;eyr=2017\">Ebird.org<\/a> records no earlier observations of these birds at the Park and says that the last time they were observed anywhere along the West Arm of Kootenay Lake was four years ago in Nelson.<\/p>\n<p>Gray-crowned Rosy Finches summer to our north and winter to our south, but they are rarely seen passing through the area around the Lake. It was fun to see them in the Park two days ago.<\/p>\n<p>This is a portion of the flock of Gray-crowned Rosy Finches.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-22112\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/greycrownedrosyfinch171024bsdmf.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The birds did not alight, so the only pictures managed were of them flying.\u00a0<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-22113\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/greycrownedrosyfinch171024as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These finches have a delightful flying style called flap-bounding flight. (See, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=16170\">flap-bounding redpolls<\/a>.)
