{"id":22683,"date":"2018-01-22T15:55:47","date_gmt":"2018-01-22T23:55:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=22683"},"modified":"2018-01-22T18:20:24","modified_gmt":"2018-01-23T02:20:24","slug":"shrike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=22683","title":{"rendered":"Shrike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There is something about the name, <em>shrike<\/em>, that strikes terror.<\/p>\n<p>Today, I spotted a Northern Shrike within meters of where yesterday I watched a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=22671\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Northern Pygmy Owl<\/a>. Each bird is a rare to uncommon winter resident in our valleys. They are about the same size, and each is a deadly predator upon other birds of about its own size or smaller.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So what happens when they meet?<\/p>\n<p>As each attacks another bird from behind, it may just depend upon which gets the drop on the other. One anecdote does not a case make, but, here is a link to a <a href=\"https:\/\/thewellnessalmanac.com\/2015\/02\/02\/birdwatch-pygmy-owl-kills-northern-shrike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">picture where the owl won<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A Northern Shrike sits beside a path across from yesterday&#8217;s Northern Pygmy Owl.<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-22685\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/northernshrike180122as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The shrike was not as tolerant of humans walking along the path as was the owl.
