Monday was the first time I saw their breeding plumages.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Double-crested Cormorant is named for its breeding plumage: two tufts of feathers on its head. The eponymous crests might be either white or black. The crests last only a couple of months, primarily during the time spent around the nest. Probably the only place cormorants breed around here is at the south end of the Lake.<\/p>\n<p>A Double-crested Cormorant shows its eponymous white crests.<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-22885\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/cormorant180305fs2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hidden behind an old piling, a second cormorant with black crests went unnoticed at first. <br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-22879\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/cormorant180305es.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p> When flying, the cormorant flattens its crests (as does the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=19460\">Great Horned Owl<\/a>). The two cormorants seemed to have a combative relationship. The white-crested bird kept trying to intimidate the black-crested one.
