Here are highlights of things seen two days ago.<\/p>\n<p>Turkey Vulture <br \/>\n Vultures return to this area mid-March, but I would not have expected to see one so quickly, let alone have the unusual view of the topside of its wings.<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23140\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/turkeyvulture160321as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Northern Shrike <br \/>\n This is the first time I have seen a shrike with prey, and a vole, no less. Unfortunately, the shrike was flying just behind a red osier dogwood.<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23149\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/shrike180321DMF.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Elk <br \/>\n This is a portion of a much larger herd of elk seen in the distance.<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23146\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/elk180321s2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"360\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Killdeer\u00a0<br \/>\n A killdeer flew by.<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23144\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/killdeer180321as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Northern Pintail<br \/>\n The pintail is an elegant-looking duck, but I have rarely seen more than two at once. This flying flock was spectacular.<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23143\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/pintailducks180321as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rookery<br \/>\n The season is early, but this view of a portion of a rookery already shows a half-dozen Great Blue Herons and a couple of Double-crested Cormorants.<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23147\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rookery180321s2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"360\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Red-tailed Hawk<br \/>\n When leaving its perch, this hawk spread its wings and tail.<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23141\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/redtailedhawk180321as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Red-winged Blackbird<br \/>\n This male was in full song and full display.\u00a0<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23142\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/redwingblackbird180321as2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; There are worse ways to spend the better part of a day than wandering through nature.
