{"id":23287,"date":"2018-04-27T19:59:59","date_gmt":"2018-04-28T02:59:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=23287"},"modified":"2018-04-27T19:59:59","modified_gmt":"2018-04-28T02:59:59","slug":"bombylius-major-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=23287","title":{"rendered":"Bombylius major"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Early most springs, I post pictures of <em>Bombylius major<\/em>, for it is only at this time that one sees this interesting fly in one&#8217;s garden.<\/p>\n<p>Abruptly, spring has arrived, and so has <em>bombylius<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although <em>Bombylius major<\/em> is a fly, it has the appearance of a bumble bee &#8212; a mimicry crafted to avoid being eaten by birds.<\/p>\n<p>The reason <em>bombylius<\/em> only appears in the spring is that this is the time solitary bees temporarily leave their nests unprotected. Unlike the social bees, each solitary bee lays her own eggs and does so in\u00a0a small tunnel she has provisioned with food such as nectar and pollen. She then seals the entrance.<\/p>\n<p>However, for the\u00a0short time it takes for a solitary bee to do this, the tunnel entrance is open and that is when the <em>Bombylius<\/em>\u00a0fly enters and deposits its own eggs inside.\u00a0When a <em>bombylius<\/em> larva emerges, it feeds on the provisions meant for the bee larvae. It then changes form and eats the bee larvae, themselves. <em>Bombylius<\/em> has only a short time in the spring to give its offspring this opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>You have to do what you have to do.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Bombylius<\/em> fly looks like some fuzzy toy designed by a manufacturer of children&#8217;s toys. Its proboscis is long, and its wings are half black and half transparent.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23289\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/bombyliusmajor180427as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When <em>Bombylius major<\/em> collects nectar, its long proboscis and its long legs allow it to avoid getting close to a flower &#8212; something that might contain a crab spider.<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23288\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/bombyliusmajor180427bs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Early most springs, I post pictures of Bombylius major, for it is only at this time that one sees this interesting fly in one&#8217;s garden.
