{"id":23479,"date":"2018-05-14T15:25:42","date_gmt":"2018-05-14T22:25:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=23479"},"modified":"2018-05-14T15:25:42","modified_gmt":"2018-05-14T22:25:42","slug":"churts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=23479","title":{"rendered":"Churts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I was standing in the shade of a tree listening to a sound like none I had heard before: a repeated, edgy, explosive, pop. It was coming from the far side of the tree. What could it possibly be?<\/p>\n<p>When I rounded the tree, the unexpected source turned out to be a meadowlark. Although the meadowlark is noted for its melodious song, this vocalization was markedly different.<\/p>\n<p>This sound is called a <em>churt<\/em>, which is a coinage likely of onomatopoeic origin. Apparently the few birds that\u00a0<em>churt<\/em>\u00a0do so merely as a way of saying: &#8220;Here I am.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A Western Meadowlark churts, &#8220;I&#8217;m here.&#8221; <br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23480\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/meadowlark180513s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; I was standing in the shade of a tree listening to a sound like none I had heard before: a repeated, edgy, explosive, pop.
