But prior to migration, numerous loons gather in social groups.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The sequence is roughly as follows: loons winter at the Coast; they fly to the Lake in early May where they <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=23409\">fight rivals and meet with mates<\/a>; they fly to smaller lakes high in the mountains to <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=10985\">breed<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=8273\">raise chicks;<\/a>\u00a0they <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=14911\">gather again<\/a> on Kootenay Lake; they fly back to the Coast to winter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A raft of seven Common Loons meets on Kootenay Lake prior to their migration to the Coast.
