{"id":24582,"date":"2018-09-09T16:29:58","date_gmt":"2018-09-09T23:29:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=24582"},"modified":"2018-09-09T16:29:58","modified_gmt":"2018-09-09T23:29:58","slug":"feasting-on-fish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=24582","title":{"rendered":"Feasting on fish"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fish are a staple food for much of the wildlife around the Lake &#8212; we are, after all, dealing with a lake &#8212; so, I show wildlife feasting on fish.<\/p>\n<p>This posting was prompted by recent pictures, but these images have been supplemented by shots drawn from earlier occasions. The reason for this is that some of the events are so fleeting that few have been recorded, and one can only show what one has.<\/p>\n<p>There are about two dozen species of fish in the Lake. Rather than try to show all, I illustrate only the spectacular spawning Kokanee. Most spawning creeks are well shaded, but for a shot of the Kokanee in their dazzling redness, one must find a spot where they pass through sunlight.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-24590\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/kokanee180906s-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The raven is an inveterate predator upon the spawning Kokanee. <br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-24583\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/raven180828s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During much of the warm season, ospreys specialize in suckers, but come the time of Kokanee spawning, preferences change. Notice the two wasps taking an interest in the Kokanee.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-24585\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/osprey180906as2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Bald Eagle is a versatile eater, so during Kokanee spawning, it takes advantage of them. <br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-24587\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/eaglefish141016s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The mallard is a flexible feeder that often poaches Kokanee eggs, but here it eats a carcass. <br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-24586\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/mallard180828s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A perennial favourite of wildlife is the sucker. Here a Hooded Merganser downs one. <br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-24012\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/hoodedmerganser171114as3-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Most birds must swallow their meal whole, so the size of the prey changes with the size of the predator. This Belted Kingfisher is limited to rather small fish. <br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-18500\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/kingfisher160825as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A Pied-billed Grebe can handle a modestly larger fish.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-18689\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/piedbilledgrebe160921as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A Great Blue Heron can swallow a rather large one.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-14831\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/heronfish150825ds2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A gull can pick a fish apart, yet, this fish was swallowed whole as the bird flew.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-24589\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/gullfish111020s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The fish being consumed by this Common Merganser is unidentified. <br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-18522\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/merganser160830bs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A loon swallows a fish far out on the lake. <br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-11453\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/loonfish140823bs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A lesser known fish is the Slimy Sculpin being consumed by this Horned Grebe.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-24591\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/grebesculpin111102s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One might imagine that fish are the preserve of birds. Not so, here a Black Bear eats a Kokanee. <br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-24584\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/blackbear170915bsdmf.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And a River Otter eats a sucker.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-14569\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/otter150808as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I have failed to show a Turkey Vulture eating anything. That they hang around and feast on fish carcasses is clear, but I have yet to catch them in the act.
