However, through September, they were still here fishing.\u00a0<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-24756\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/osprey180912s2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A Merlin chases dragonflies. <br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-24755\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/merlin180922cs2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Four wigeons fly by.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-24766\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/wigeon180908s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While one of the most abundant terrestrial birds that winters in North America, the Lapland Longspur is downright scarce around Kootenay Lake. It is only seen here in its non-breeding plumage (it breeds in the Arctic). Last year, I thought I had spotted one, but it turned out to be a Savanah Sparrow (sigh&#8230;). With luck this year&#8217;s composite does show two Lapland Longspurs.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-24752\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/laplandlongspur180927s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The White-winged Crossbill is a strange bird that is distinctly uncommon. Its peculiarly crossed bill is adapted for prying open spruce cones to get at the seeds.\u00a0Here are two of them feeding.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-24753\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Whitewingedcrossbill180927as2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Throughout August and September, I watched for black bears. This is only the second one spotted. This scene makes one wonder if bears have an aesthetic sense of the autumnal beauty of a hillside covered in fireweed. <br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-24754\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/blackbear180927s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; This is a compilation of a few images, none of which had its own posting in September.
