This distinction seemed odd, for these are not matching classifications: deciduous refers to a seasonal shedding of leaves; conifer to a reproductive structure. Skepticism was appropriate: there are, in fact, broadleaf trees that are evergreen &#8212; the arbutus, and conifers that are deciduous &#8212; the larch.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, my favourite deciduous tree is the larch. Each fall, it decorates the mountainside when its needles turn golden before being shed.<\/p>\n<p>The Western Larch flows down this distant mountainside like ringlets. <br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-24972\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/larch181022bs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These backlit larch appear orangish.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-24973\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/larch181022cs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And nearby in bright sunlight, the larch is golden. <br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-24971\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/larch181022as2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; When I was a child, I was told of two kinds of trees: deciduous and conifer.
