Grazers, such as elk, primarily eat grass; Browsers, such white-tailed deer and moose primarily eat buds and leaves.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The key word here is <em>primarily<\/em>. When the season changes and their favourite food is scarce, cervids will adapt. So it is that elk, which previously I always had seen grazing had begun to browse.<\/p>\n<p>Elk will graze on grass when it is available (April 30, 2012).<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5057\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/elk120430s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, this week elk were seen browsing on the needles of Douglas-fir trees.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-25301\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/elk181129bs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Well, what did you expect?
