It started slowly with the arrival of male Rufous Hummingbirds. Then some female Rufous arrived. Now are added the Calliope and Black-chinned. Sometimes they share a feeder, sometimes they fight to dominate access to what is actually a plentiful resource.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is a week-old view of a male Rufous when it had the feeders all to itself. <br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-28764\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/rufoushummingbird200504as2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The male rufous hummers spar over feeder access.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-28759\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/rufoushummingbird200510cs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Female Rufous hummers have arrived. <br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-28760\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/rufoushummingbird200510bs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>An occasional Black-chinned Hummingbird visits.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-28761\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/blackchinnedhummingbird200510s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our smallest hummingbird, the Calliope, comes often and seems to go unchallenged by Rufous.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-28762\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/caliopehummingbird200510as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My most spectacular shot of the morning was of a male Rufous Hummingbird that was attacking another hummer from above.
