The blog is now restored.<\/p>\n<p>A week ago, the wildfire smoke became intolerable, and I headed west to find cleaner air. While away, I continued to explore nature. All the things I show in this restoration goulash are things that have also been seen around the Lake, yet a number of them are distinctly uncommon there.<\/p>\n<p>This female Anna&#8217;s Hummingbird is showing iridescent spots on her throat. Around the Lake, Anna&#8217;s are seen rarely. I have seen one. <br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-30902\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/annashummingbird210726cs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The male Anna&#8217;s is noted for its iridescent gorget and crown.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-30903\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/annashummingbird210726as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I get to see a Barred Owl at the Lake maybe once a year, yet here I have seen three. <br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-30909\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/barredowl210724as2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Looking greenish owing to light passing through the leaves, another Barred sits deep in a deciduous tree.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-30907\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/barredowl210726s2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Certainly Wood Ducks are seen around the Lake, but I include this shot of mommy and chick because I liked the lighting. <br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-30908\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/woodduck210724as2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We have Wilson&#8217;s Warblers at the Lake, but I had to go elsewhere to see one. <br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-30910\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/wilsonswarbler210724s2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Second only to the Anna&#8217;s in the unlikelihood of it being seen is the Virginia Rail.\u00a0<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-30913\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/virginiarail210724bs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0This marsh bird is not only few in number, but decidedly secretive.\u00a0<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-30912\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/virginiarail210724as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here is the (black) chick of the Virginia Rail.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-30911\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/virginiarail210724cs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I can see a Merlin a few times a year around the Lake, but I include this picture because it is amusing. Notice the wooden beam extending from below the house peak on the right. It is festooned with wires in an effort to prevent birds from perching on it and defecating. The Merlin&#8217;s response: move to the peak and defecated on the roof. <br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-30904\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/merlin210728s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Certainly we have raccoons around the Lake, but I have rarely seen a mommy raccoon with its kit, and certainly not in a tree. <br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-30921\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/raccoon210723bs2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; A week ago, this blog crashed: earlier postings could not be seen and nothing more could be posted.
