It is a mixture of local shots and ones from the around Vancouver. Yet, the Coastal ones are all of creatures (one fishy exception) also found at Kootenay Lake &#8212; albeit sometimes only occasionally. I open with raptors, all but one being local.<\/p>\n<p>August is the season when Osprey chicks fledge and head out on their own. Here an adult on the nest is holding a fish, while a fledgling lands.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31065\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/osprey210827s2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One fledgling watches another arriving with a chunk of fish. The fish was not shared.\u00a0<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31081\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/osprey210821s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Cooper&#8217;s Hawk is a bit uncommon everywhere. This one was seen in Burnaby.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31070\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/coopershawk210806s2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Despite range maps that suggest that the Merlin is strictly a summer resident of Kootenay Lake, it is a year round staple of the region. As is evident from this shot, the Merlin is not easily spooked. Maybe it is sizing me up as a meal.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31066\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/merlin210825s2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"900\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Bald Eagles abound around the Lake, but capturing a close dramatic shot requires insight, such as knowing to visit a spawning creek in August. Photo courtesy Cynthia Fraser.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31085\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/baldeagle210823s2CCF.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another bird that hangs out around spawning creeks is the Great Blue Heron. <br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31083\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/heron210826s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now, this is a morsel that many raptors would happily grab: a house mouse. Of course, its name does not mean that it lives in houses any more than does the House Finch. This one was definitely wild.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31067\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/housemouse210821s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A crow inspects roadkill (a skunk). However,\u00a0 traffic was too disruptive for it to feed. <br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31082\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/crow210824s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We have river otters on the Lake, but the fact that this picture was taken at the Coast is evident by their catch: a starry flounder.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31068\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/otter210808as3.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"576\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is the season to admire a wide range of migrating shorebirds. This is a parade of Long-billed Dowitchers. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31073\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/longbilleddowitcher210806as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This Downy Woodpecker is on a cedar tree.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31075\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/downywoodpecker210802s2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps my favourite coastal observation was of a bird seen here, but only rarely: a Green Heron. It apparently has a greenish back, although that wasn&#8217;t evident.
