It has been cold and rainy, yet there are summer migrants around. And the insect life has begun.<\/p>\n<p>A Western Bluebird couple examines a nest box to see if it will be suitable for their family.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31732\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/westernbluebird220413as2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A Black-capped Chickadee works with its partner to carve a cavity nest.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31733\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/chickadee220420s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next are two mammals that are both members of the ground squirrel family. The larger of the two is this one, the Yellow-bellied Marmot, which weighs from 3 to 5 kg. It lives and has its burrows in talus slopes.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31727\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/yellowbelliedmarmot220423s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here, a second member of the family is the Columbian Ground Squirrel. But it is much smaller than the marmot, and weighs only about 0.3 to 0.8 kg, so about a tenth of the marmot&#8217;s weight. This creature carves cavities in fields of dirt.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31731\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/columbiagroundsqirrel220413s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A just arrived female Osprey looks down from a perch and calls for her partner.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31726\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/osprey220424s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The White-crowned Sparrow is also a summer migrant.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31728\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/whitecrowedsparrow220425s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another summer visitor is the Red-naped Sapsucker.
