I went back to the nest at the end of May and the chick was in dark brown plumage, but had not yet fledged.<\/p>\n<p>The eagle chick in dark brown plumage sits on its nest.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31862\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/eagle220531es2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>An adult (probably the mother) brings a fish to eat. The head of the chick is on the left. There is evidence of a dead osprey in the nest: a body feather below the chick&#8217;s bill and some tail feathers on the right.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31858\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/eagle220531as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The chick scarfs a hunk of fish.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31859\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/eagle220531bs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Later, the chick works on the whole fish. Note the fish bits on the adult&#8217;s beak.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31860\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/eagle220531cs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Although it has yet to fledge, the chick exercises its wings to strengthen them. Note the fine white lines extending from the flight feathers. These are the rhaches, or the feather shafts of the flight feathers.
