The trees begin to bloom, and skunk cabbage sprouts in moist areas. Birds mate and build nests. Migrants arrive and some pass northward. This is but a sampling.<\/p>\n<p>A permanent resident, the Song Sparrow, gathers materials for a nest.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-33247\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/songsparrow240421s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At this time of the year, most of these tiny frenetic birds, the Ruby-crowned Kinglet, pass right through on their way north to breed. This one is a female and it lacks the ruby crown. Indeed, even the male only shows the crown occasionally.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33251\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/rubycrownedkinglet240410s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Turkeys are now a staple of this area, but their annual mating is now largely past. However, some males are still in display. Here is a spread tail from behind.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-33250\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/wildturkey240410as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And here is the male turkey&#8217;s head and neck.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-33249\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/wildturkey240410bs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Townsend&#8217;s Solitaire will soon be heading north to breed.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33264\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/townsendssolitare240409s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You know it is spring when the Mountain Bluebirds come through. This is a male.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33257\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/mountainbluebird240410s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And this is a female Mountain Bluebird.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33258\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/mountainbluebird240423s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Osprey have arrived and are beginning to build nests. They will now be a staple of the Lake through September.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-33248\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/osprey240418as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is the season of flowers and one of the first is the glacier lily.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-33242\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/glacierlily240417s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Usually, the first orchid to bloom is the fairy slipper in May. However, these small beginnings were found late April. This one with fake yellow <span id=\"gloss10\" class=\"gloss\">anthers<\/span> is an eastern variety.\u00a0<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-33244\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/fairyslipper240418as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And the one with fake white <span id=\"gloss10\" class=\"gloss\">anthers is a western variety. We get both.<\/span><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-33243\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/fairyslipper240418bs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The mourning cloak is one of the first large butterflies to appear in the spring as it is one of the few that overwinters as an adult. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-33245\" style=\"font-size: 12px;\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/mourningcloack240416s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Robins have arrived in large numbers and will be with us through October.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-33241\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/robin240413s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A chipmunk hides in the brush and eats.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33261\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/chipmunk240417s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Turkey Vultures typically arrive from the south in March and are with us until October.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-33240\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/turkeyvulture240416S.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Snow Goose is seen in large numbers at the Coast, but not here. We are far off the bird&#8217;s usual migratory track. Only occasionally,\u00a0 one or two pass through on migration.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-33246\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/snowgoose240421s2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You know that spring is here when the Red-winged Blackbird arrives.
