{"id":33598,"date":"2024-08-01T15:57:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-01T22:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=33598"},"modified":"2024-08-01T15:57:00","modified_gmt":"2024-08-01T22:57:00","slug":"heron-mallard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=33598","title":{"rendered":"Heron &#038; mallard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This morning, a heron swallowed a baby mallard.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I have got to admit that the Great Blue Herons I have watched will eat just about anything they can swallow whole. And this is what it did to the baby duck.<\/p>\n<p>But most of the time, it typically only catches and eats small fish. However, just below this morning&#8217;s shot of the heron about to swallow the mallard, I have added two earlier shots suggesting that as far as food goes, anything goes.<\/p>\n<p>After a bit of adjusting the duck&#8217;s position, the heron swallowed it. <br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33599\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/heron_mallard240801as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This Kokanee was the largest fish I have seen the heron swallow (2015\/o8\/25).<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14831\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/heronfish150825ds2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And my favourite shot was of a fully conscious vole about to be swallowed (2013\/07\/17).<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15674\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/heronvole130717s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; This morning, a heron swallowed a baby mallard.
