{"id":34426,"date":"2025-04-22T15:48:28","date_gmt":"2025-04-22T22:48:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=34426"},"modified":"2025-04-22T15:48:28","modified_gmt":"2025-04-22T22:48:28","slug":"turkey-vulture-eating","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=34426","title":{"rendered":"Turkey Vulture eating"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Turkey Vultures are migrants that come here to breed from mid-March to mid-September, having wintered well to our south.\u00a0<\/wp><\/p>\n<p>For years, I only saw them soaring as they scanned the ground for carrion to eat. Certainly, they did find carrion, but I never found them when they were on the ground eating it. In fact, it was years before I even saw some alight in a tree.<\/p>\n<p>But, that all changed this morning.<\/p>\n<p>This morning, I again saw a Turkey Vulture soaring.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-34427\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/turkeyvulture240422as.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But, for the first time, I saw a Turkey Vulture on the ground.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-34428\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/turkeyvulture240422bs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From there, it approached the carcass, of what I assume had been a deer.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-34429\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/turkeyvulture240422cs.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And set to eating it, a first for me.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-34430\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/turkeyvulture240422ds.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Turkey Vultures are migrants that come here to breed from mid-March to mid-September, having wintered well to our south.\u00a0 For years, I only saw them soaring as they scanned the ground for carrion to eat.
