It winters far to the south, but migrates north to the Okanagan in the summer to breed. It generally avoids the Kootenays. The problem is that this bird prefers dry, sparsely vegetated areas, including, sagebrush flats, badlands, dry barren foothills, but our region is heavily forested.\u00a0<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34455 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/saysphoebe250405s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now three birds with something to eat in their bills: This is a dipper by Dorothy Fraser.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-34454\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/dipper250427sdmf.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And a Black-billed Magpie alighting on a fence and then eating.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-34453\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/magpie250428s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then a Song Sparrow with a beak full of grubs.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-34456\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/songsparrow250430s.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I have seen this Merlin in the distance for a month, but this is the first close picture.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-34452\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/merlin250427s2.jpg\" alt=\"\" onclick=\"return false\" onmousedown=\"return false\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I have been watching Violet-green Swallows. I had wanted a picture that showed both colours in its name, but they are not seen when the bird is sitting, and when it is flying it is hard to get because it of its great speed.
