But, now and then there is a heron that<span style=\"line-height: 24px;\">\u00a0looks<\/span>\u00a0really blue.<\/p>\n<p>I was reminded of this colour difference when visiting the Coast where I saw a heron that was strikingly blue. So, why the difference?<\/p>\n<p>The main species of Great Blue Heron is designated\u00a0<em>Ardea herudias herodias<\/em>. There is a subspecies found at the Coast called\u00a0<em>Ardea herodias fannini<\/em>. Was the markedly blue heron seen at the Coast a <em>fannini<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>The plot thickens when one visits ebird.org and discovers that the site plots the range of both the <a href=\"http:\/\/ebird.org\/ebird\/map\/grbher3?neg=true&amp;env.minX=-126.75759887695313&amp;env.minY=47.436490583535516&amp;env.maxX=-111.91506958007813&amp;env.maxY=53.24635459360145&amp;zh=true&amp;gp=true&amp;mr=1-12&amp;bmo=1&amp;emo=12&amp;yr=1900-2011&amp;byr=1900&amp;eyr=2011\" target=\"_blank\">Great Blue Heron<\/a> and something they label as the <a href=\"http:\/\/ebird.org\/ebird\/map\/grbher?neg=true&amp;env.minX=-147.8759765625&amp;env.minY=38.479394673276445&amp;env.maxX=-29.1357421875&amp;env.maxY=74.61344527005673&amp;zh=true&amp;gp=false&amp;mr=1-12&amp;bmo=1&amp;emo=12&amp;yr=1900-2011&amp;byr=1900&amp;eyr=2011\" target=\"_blank\">Great Blue Heron (Blue form)<\/a>. Do these categories correspond to <em>herodias<\/em> and <em>fannini<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>That issue aside, ebird shows the (normal, and presumably grey) Great Blue Heron extending across the US and southern Canada. In BC, the Blue form is found at the Coast and\u00a0occasionally\u00a0in the Okanagan with one observation at Creston.<\/p>\n<p>I show some examples below, but my primary question is: How often is the Blue form seen in the West Kootenay?<\/p>\n<p>Here is a standard heron around here. It is distinctly greyish.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3795\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/heron090223.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here is the\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 24px;\">heron seen at the Coast. It is\u00a0<\/span>distinctly bluish.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3797\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/heron1112261.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This heron was seen a few years ago on the West Arm of Kootenay Lake. It is distinctly bluish.
