{"id":3859,"date":"2012-01-10T09:04:32","date_gmt":"2012-01-10T17:04:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=3859"},"modified":"2012-01-11T07:59:54","modified_gmt":"2012-01-11T15:59:54","slug":"iconoclastic-dipper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=3859","title":{"rendered":"Iconoclastic dipper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The American Dipper is\u00a0covered in guidebooks with statements such as:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Perches on rocks within fast-flowing mountain streams and dives underwater for aquatic insect larvae.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It seems that one local dipper failed to read these manuals; its\u00a0behaviour\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 24px;\">departed\u00a0<\/span>somewhat from the description.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday&#8217;s dipper:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Didn&#8217;t hunt along a stream, but in a lake (behaviour seen before in midwinter);<\/li>\n<li>Sang from on a rock perch, but then flew to deeper water, alighted\u00a0on the surface, floated, peered below and dove;<\/li>\n<li>Surfaced with (what seems to be) a fish and flew off.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This dipper acted rather as if it were a kingfisher wannabe.\u00a0(Whimsey aside, I recognize that limited guidebook space allows<span style=\"line-height: 24px;\">\u00a0for few subtleties<\/span>).<\/p>\n<p>A dipper sings from a rock along the shore of Kootenay Lake.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3860\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/dipper120109as.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It then flew to deeper water, floated a bit while peering below, then dove.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3861\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/dipper120109ds.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After surfacing, it flew off carrying, what certainly looks like, a small fish.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3862\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/dipper120109es.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The American Dipper is\u00a0covered in guidebooks with statements such as: Perches on rocks within fast-flowing mountain streams and dives underwater for aquatic insect larvae.
