{"id":4190,"date":"2012-02-16T11:39:02","date_gmt":"2012-02-16T19:39:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=4190"},"modified":"2012-02-16T18:13:29","modified_gmt":"2012-02-17T02:13:29","slug":"harassed-hawk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/?p=4190","title":{"rendered":"Harassed hawk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday&#8217;s roadside drama involving a\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 24px;\">Red-tailed Hawk\u00a0<\/span>(intermediate morph) and a Common Raven is played out in the five pictures, below.<\/p>\n<p>The Red-tailed Hawk was perched in a small tree beside the road. It just ignored the clicking sound coming from the open window of a car that had pulled alongside.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4196\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/redtailedhawk120215as.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After a while, and for no apparent reason, it flew off. It only went down the road for a short distance and alighted on a snag. Its red tail could now be seen.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4193\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/redtailedhawk120215bs.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Almost immediately, a raven began to harass it, diving on it and swooping up from below.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4207\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/redtailedhawk120215cs1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t have time for this nonsense! I&#8217;m outta here.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4195\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/redtailedhawk120215ds.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yet, leaving was not good enough for the raven, which chased the hawk into the distance along the valley.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4191\" onmousedown=\"return false\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.kootenay-lake.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/redtailedhawk120215es.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The first time I saw a raven drive off Red-tailed Hawks, it was unexpected&#8212;why would the hawk retreat? Actually, the raven is the slightly heavier bird and its tallons are long and sharp. (The raven looks smaller in the above picture because it is a bit farther away).
